Ohio feels strange in comparison to Chicago.

I feel as if I am in another world. Chicago is the best home I have ever chose.

I can’t believe i did it….

About 4 days ago, I came out to chicago with $100, a camera bag, a duffel bag of clothes, and a few connections.

I have completed the following in 4 days:

Moved into a VERY sweet apartment in Lakeview with Taylor Castle from Brooks. (video coming soon)

Caught up with friends I have been meaning to actually meet in person for nearly 10 years.

Helping to build a studio next to the Congress theatre in Bucktown.

Got a job backbacking and already worked one day so far. Made twice the amount i came out with that night.

99.9% sure I will be working for calumet full time in the next week or 2.

Have 3 assisting gigs this month, all paying my day rate multiple days in a row.

Working on a gig that is going to be the biggest shoot I have ever done (anywhere from 20k to 150k)

All in 4 days. I love it here. Though I still am living with 3 days of clothes, my laptop and a camera, I am ok with that. Soon enough I will be heading back to Toledo to pick the rest up.

Chicago is amazing. Its gorgeous, the food is amazing (and fattening), people are very nice, talkative, yet extremely impatient drivers. (never ever ever driving in this town. EVER) I feel at home, even when dealing with the cold.

There is still much to do and many hurtles to jump BUT I am happy, excited, and looking forward to what is to come.

This is my pumpkin for halloween.

Yes. That is my hasselblad 503cx. I am the biggest geek on earth. Thats ok with me.

On another note, we all know what has been going on with the economy right now. Much of us are out of work. I am out of work. Its not fun for anyone.

My industry is crumbling right now. Photographers who have long been known for their talent and known for being paid VERY well for what they do are now filing for bankruptcy. Just today Markus Klinko and Indrani filed for bankruptcy. Annie Leibovitz even has her images on lean and if she doesn’t pay her bills she will lose her rights to everything she has worked for. Much of the pros I have worked with or know have either had to switch to video, sold everything they can, or have even left the industry entirely.

Calumet has even left Santa Barbara due to not enough students coming into Brooks Institute of Photography. This may not have any significance to you but they were one of the lifelines to us.

These things are hard to hear. That is another reason why I am changing paces as well and moving to Chicago this next week. I can’t freelance anymore. I am very much scraping by here in ohio and cannot afford to move back to NY or back to LA. Chicago is such a mecca and it is but 4 hours away. I hope it will be my last bastion. I have many friends there who I know and trust and I have a job opportunity at Calumet.

I am scared. I’m broke and going to be living out of a camera bag a suitcase again, which isn’t hard for me to do but gets tiresome quickly. I have faith this will work. It has to work. I do not have many options left if it doesn’t.

If any of you live in the chicago area and have some heads up about it, information on the best parts of town to live in (i’m shooting for buck-town), or generally want to catch up, feel free to email me. I would love to make some more friends in a new place.
